Urban mobility:
common good and public space sharing
On 16 September 2024, a morning dedicated to mobility was held at the Università Statale di Milano, entitled ‘European Mobility Week 2024: Common Good and Sharing Public Spaces’. The meeting singled out the city of Milan as the starting point from which to reflect on and discuss increasingly important issues for the city’s development, namely those related to mobility within the city.
The event was promoted by Università Statale di Milano, Lendlease, Arexpo, Fondazione Triulza and Think Tank Smart Mobility@MIND. The topics discussed concerned the role of urban mobility in the shared use of public space. The occasion? The traditional European Mobility Week (16-22 September), the European initiative created to raise public awareness of mobility, transport, safety, infrastructure and environmental sustainability issues.
For 2024, the European Commission has chosen as its central theme ‘sharing public space’, an increasingly relevant topic considering that more than 70 per cent of the European population lives in urban areas, where public space is often scarce. The main initiatives of the event included the redevelopment of urban spaces and the design of safe streets, with a focus on issues such as school roads and the promotion of active and sustainable travel.
The day opened at 9 a.m. with Riccardo Guidetti, Professor of Agricultural Mechanics and Mobility Manager at Statale, Massimo Minelli, President of Fondazione Triulza ETS, Alessandro Cervetti, Arexpo, and Fabrizio Zichichi, Project Director MIND and MSG Lendlease. This will be followed by speeches by experts and experts representing companies, public institutions and the academic world articulated in three round tables on key topics such as sustainable mobility, space sharing and urban safety.
A further theme to reflect on, to enrich the debate in future meetings, also concerns vertical transport within buildings (including public transport infrastructures), which allows the buildings themselves to dialogue with the built environment that surrounds them, and which allows people a more fluid and inclusive experience of the city and its spaces.
