Italy, lift & escalators in 2023:
read all industry figures
Year 2023 saw a steady growth trend for the Italian Lift and Escalator sector, which closed the year with an increase in aggregate turnover of 9.5% at current values. This is what emerges from the data on the sector provided by ANIE AssoAscensori in June 2024.
According to the Association’s annual report, Italian domestic demand continued to benefit from the construction sector’s expansion path, also in the framework of tax incentive mechanisms. Growth in new installations and complete replacements continued, and demand for modernisations remained dynamic.

According to ANIE AssoAscensori, exports also confirmed a good growth rate in 2023 (+8.6% at current values), against a strong slowdown in imports (+1.7%) after the previous year’s jump. The largest contributions to the growth in foreign sales came from the German market (+25%), the leading destination for Italian technologies in the sector, with a share of over 15% of total exports.
Outside the European area, other markets also showed signs of vitality: among these, the largest growth was recorded in Egypt (+33%), Australia (+19%) and Israel (+21%). Sales to Saudi Arabia declined (-4% per cent), which will be the leading destination market outside Europe by the end of 2023.

The sector’s outlook for 2024 is cautiously oriented and conditioned by the high level of uncertainty in the global economic environment.
In the first three months of the year, exports fell by 8% compared to the first quarter of 2023, the result of declining trends in the main destination markets in the European area, where over 70% of foreign sales are destined. In the Italian domestic market, with reference to the construction sector, the large weakening expected on the residential front may only be partially offset by public demand, supported by the gradual implementation of projects under the Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan.
