Elevatori Club, the architect Alberto Salvati’s thinking

 In Elevatori Club

Dear Chairman,

the new editorial space you are reserving for the ‘Elevatori Magazine Community’, the Elevatori Club dedicated to all the readers of the magazine, seems to me to be of great interest, just after the recognition assigned to Elevatori Magazine, of Historical Trademark by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy.

It will be an honour to be able to participate: certainly (as far as I am concerned), first and foremost, as a user who knows the lift because he uses it. Very important for the contribution that can be made, as a user and just, to the development not only technological of the lift-machine, which in any case is the responsibility of specialists, but, as I always point out in all my speeches related to this sector, to be conducted taking into account the needs of all of us humans (complex organisms), demanding, both on the rational and irrational level.

As an architect, I then believe that a collaboration is appropriate that, not only on a technical level, but also on an artistic one, can induce innovative solutions for this machine that is not only such, but an integral part of the architectural space. A field, that of architecture, in which the search for new spatialities and new relationships between its many parts is increasingly active, and is leading us to new ways of living both on an individual and social level.

As I have always hoped: a positive correlation between different but contiguous industrial sectors. For example, that of construction and that of furniture. Even more necessary here, between the lift sector and the construction sector: a proceeding together within space, of all operators referring to vertical transport.

The lift is a complex system that moves a space-cabin within an even more complex building structure with which it must be coordinated.

Engineers, technicians, architects, users, principals, all should participate in the definition of these spaces in an equal formation of different competences, but capable of innovative spatial definitions, always in progress, in harmony with the environment that surrounds us.

Today, we have at our disposal an intelligence that we call artificial, but which will have to be increasingly natural, because it is man who created it to enhance his operational capabilities and it will certainly come to his aid in defining a human habitat that respects the environment and is capable of safeguarding it.

Man’s belligerence will increasingly have to be confronted with a nature in which it is necessary to live in symbiosis. In order to be able to remain as long as possible on this planet, which has been our home since time immemorial but which we have made difficult.

I wish you and the magazine, conducted with careful attention to all the problems it continually faces, ever greater success.

Alberto Salvati
